For longtime The Young and the Restless viewers, few storylines remain as devastating as the death of Delia Abbott. More than a decade later, her name still surfaces when Billy Abbott and Adam Newman clash, proving just how deeply the tragedy reshaped the lives of several Genoa City families.
But who was Delia Abbott, and what exactly happened the night she died?
Who Was Delia Abbott?

Cordelia “Delia” Abbott was the daughter of Billy Abbott and Chloe Mitchell. Although Chloe initially led everyone to believe that Cane Ashby was Delia’s father, it was eventually revealed that Billy was her biological dad.
Delia was born on-screen in 2009 and quickly became a beloved part of the Abbott and Chancellor families. As a child, she was known for her bright personality, strong bond with both of her parents, and her ability to bring out Billy’s softer side.
The character was most notably portrayed by Sophie Pollono, who took over the role after Delia was aged into a school-aged child.
Before her tragic death, Delia had already endured more than many adult soap characters. She was kidnapped, battled leukemia, and underwent a bone marrow transplant that ultimately saved her life. Through it all, Billy and Chloe fought fiercely for their daughter.
How Did Delia Abbott Die?

Delia’s death unfolded during one of the most shocking storylines in The Young and the Restless history. On the night of Delia’s school performance, Billy took his daughter out for ice cream. While Billy went inside the store, he left Delia waiting in the car with her dog, Dash.
When Dash escaped from the vehicle and ran toward the road, Delia chased after him. At the same time, Adam Newman was driving nearby. Adam swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting the dog, but accidentally struck Delia with his car.
The tragedy became even more controversial because Adam did not realize immediately that he had hit Delia. After discovering evidence linking him to the accident, he chose to conceal what had happened rather than come forward.
Delia was rushed to the hospital but ultimately died from her injuries on October 14, 2013. She was just seven years old.
The Fallout for Billy and Chloe

Delia’s death destroyed Billy and Chloe in different ways. Billy was consumed by guilt for leaving Delia alone in the car. He spiraled into grief and anger, blaming Adam for robbing him of his daughter. His obsession with revenge became one of the defining aspects of his character for years afterward.
Chloe’s grief proved just as devastating. She never truly recovered from losing Delia and eveantually embarked on her own vendetta against Adam. Convinced that justice had never been served, Chloe repeatedly plotted to make him pay.
Delia’s Lasting Legacy

Even though Delia died in 2013, her presence continues to be felt on The Young and the Restless. Billy’s pain remains a raw wound, and viewers often see how losing Delia shapes his decisions.
Adam claims that he is plagued with guilt to this day, but he does not have an audience with Billy for that conversation.
Delia’s death remains one of the soap’s most controversial storylines as fans debated who bore the greatest responsibility: Adam for covering up his involvement, Billy for leaving Delia unattended, or the tragic chain of events that led to an unimaginable loss.
What isn’t debated, however, is the impact Delia had on those who loved her. Though her time in Genoa City was brief, Delia Abbott’s story became one of the most heartbreaking chapters in The Young and the Restless’ history.
